I can’t believe it’s already Day 10 (!!!) of my 24 Days of Holiday Recipes! Not only are we almost halfway through the recipes, we’re also almost at the halfway mark until Christmas…where does the time go??!!!
Recipe #10 is a copycat or a DIY sort of recipe. Frozen Hot Chocolate is a world famous cold chocolate treat from New York’s Serendipity 3 restaurant. It’s on my foodie bucket list to visit the original restaurant in New York City. For a short period of time we had Serendipity 3 closer to us in Miami but it sadly has closed, luckily I’ve had the opportunity to try this world famous drink but I can’t wait to one day go to New York City and sip this from it’s trademark location.
Anyway, this version will do in the mean time….
I know this time of year as it’s getting colder people are usually looking for recipes to keep them warm & cozy but something about frozen hot chocolate screams Christmas time to me.
What makes frozen hot chocolate so special? The different types of chocolate used in the recipe. For my version, I used actual packets of hot cocoa mix along with semisweet & milk chocolate to make it. If you love chocolate milkshakes, consider this a chocolate milkshake that’s hella good with plenty of notes of hot cocoa (even tho it’s cold).
Traditionally frozen hot chocolate is served overflowing out of a huge glass goblet and piled high with whipped cream & chocolate shavings. It’s usually adorned with a few straws and spoons too. This recipe is definitely for at least 2 people. One fun thing about this recipe is that you can customize it to fit your taste and add in different flavors. Use different types of chocolate, candy mix ins, different types of cocoa mix, etc.
- 6 cups vanilla ice cream (or chocolate)
- 3 to 4 packets of hot cocoa mix (any flavor/brand you like)
- 1 ounce semi sweet chocolate (shaved, use a chocolate bar)
- 1 ounce milk chocolate (shaved, use a chocolate bar)
- 1 cup milk (a little more or a little less depending on the consistency you like)
- Measure out your ice cream and prep your ingredients. To shave the semi sweet & milk chocolate bars (you only need a little piece of it, just about 1 square) use a rasp grater or you can chop the chocolate up finely with a knife.
- Put all the ingredients into a blender and blend on high speed, slowly adding in the milk until thoroughly combined and smooth. Add a little extra milk if you like your milkshakes on the thinner side.
- Pour into glasses, top with whipped cream and serve immediately!
- For the hot cocoa I used Swiss Miss Marshmallow Lovers (I threw the marshmallows in too) & for the chocolate I used Baker's Chocolate Semi Sweet & Ghiradelli's Milk Chocolate Bar
