Ahhh the Oreo. There’s so many ways to love you. One of my favorite, and I mean favorite, recipes involving Oreos is making them into truffles. All it takes is 3 ingredients and a little bit of time and you have one of the most delicious, addictive, oreo lovin’ desserts that ever existed.
Oreo truffles are great anytime of the year because they are no bake (yes!) and you can dress them up to coordinate any type of holiday or special occasion.
Seeing that Valentine’s day is this Saturday (I can’t believe it, already?) I wanted to post a few recipes this week that are perfect to make for any type of valentine you may have; whether your treating a special someone, long-time love, family, friends, co-workers – this recipe for Oreo truffles will be a sweet treat for anyone.
You’ve probably seen recipes for Oreo truffles all over the internet. They’re so popular because they so sweet, so easy, and their bite sized. Who doesn’t like bit sized desserts? We should really just call them fun sized, that makes more sense to me! Anyway, I didn’t want to be left out of the Oreo truffle craze because I, like so many others, adore this great recipe.
Did I mention these things are addictive?! As if I’m not around sugar enough I am sitting here going through a plate of them just writing this post. The struggle is real people, the struggle is real 😉
Oreo truffles are simple in terms of ingredients and technique.
You will need:
1. A standard package of Oreo cookies (any flavor you like). For today’s post I did the regular Oreos and Golden Oreos. What can I say, I’m not good at picking favorites.
2. (1) 8 ounce block of cream cheese
3. At least 12 ounces Baker’s chocolate (or any type of melting chocolate bar you can find)
Putting them together isn’t tricky either. You’ll need to crush your Oreos into fine crumbs to get the best texture for the truffles. A food processor works great in this case or a crushing them inside a zip lock bag will work great too. Once the Oreos are in “fine crumb” form, toss them into a big bowl. Drop your block of cream cheese right on top of them and mash them together using your hands. I highly recommend using your hands for this. Yes, it is messy and sticky, but it’s fun too :)~
I’ll be honest with you, I tried using a hand mixer at first to get the crumbs and cream cheese together. *Big mistake* As soon as I turned my hand mixer on and tried to mix everything together I had little bits of cream cheese and oreo crumbs, everywhere – the floor, the kitchen counter, ME … I quickly turned the mixer off and said what the hell, I’m just going all in.
I’m sure if you have a stand mixer with a paddle attachment that will work wonders, but I found that mashing the cream cheese and crumbs together with my hands was fast and gave the best consistency for these truffles. You’re pretty much shooting for a huge compact Oreo/cream cheese ball without seeing much of the cream cheese.
After you’ve got the Oreos and cream cheese compacted together, scoop little balls (about 1 inch) and place them on a cookie sheet or plate and freeze them for at least a half hour. This step is very important because you want the Oreo balls to be cold and solid so when you dip them in chocolate the get covered smoothly and completely and won’t lose their shape.
Once they have had time to chill you can dip them in chocolate. Once they are covered in chocolate they will dry fairly quickly, so if you want to garnish them with sprinkles or more Oreo crumbs, do it right after you’ve covered them in chocolate and set them on a plate to dry, that way your garnish will stick. I like to make sure these are completely dry before serving them so I stick them back into the refrigerator for about 15-20 minutes. They come out perfectly and are ready to be inhaled.
What kind of sweet treats are you planning for Valentine’s day?
- 1 standard size package of Oreo cookies any variation you like
- 1 8 oz block of cream cheese
- 12 oz 3 bars Baker's chocolate
- Using a food processor or zip lock bag and kitchen mallet, crush Oreos (use entire package) until they are fine crumbs. Place the Oreo crumbs into a large mixing bowl. Add the block of cream cheese in the mixing bowl and combine the crumbs and cream cheese together using your hands. Mash/mix Oreos and cream cheese together until you have a big compact oreo/cream cheese ball with very little cream cheese showing. Scoop out little 1 inch balls with your hands and roll them around making sure they are smooth and round. Place Oreo balls onto a plate or baking sheet and allow them to chill is the freezer for at least 30 minutes. Once Oreo balls are chilled you can melt your chocolate either using the microwave or double broiler method. Dip Oreo balls into the melted chocolate and use a fork to scoop them out and let the excess chocolate drip off. Place truffles on a plate or baking sheet lined with parchment paper. If you want to decorate your truffles with sprinkles or Oreo crumbs add those while the chocolate is still wet. Return truffles back to the refrigerator to set for another 15-20 minutes. Once they are dry they are ready to serve.
- *I made two servings of this recipe which result in about 50 truffles. I used one package of golden Oreos and one package of regular Oreos, so I used 3 semi sweet chocolate baking bars and 3 white chocolate. If you are just using one package of Oreos you will only need 3 baking bars and will yield about 25 truffles.
- *Prep time above includes crushing oreos, mixing them with cream cheese, freezing, covering them in chocolate, and letting them dry completely.
